Week 1, Readiness Test
It will take 1-2 extra people to take your Readiness Test. One to video tape (or set up your camera on a tripod) and one to be the 'unexpected distraction'. You should be behind a building where you can see your camera person, but not the person who will be the distraction. Make sure your distraction comes out unexpectedly from behind a building with something your dog would normally (prior to LL) have headed towards. Have someone able to video you.
When you are ready, have your hands stacked on your LL, extra line between you and your dog, step off with your left foot and head towards your camera person. As you approach within 15' of the corner of the building, have your distraction come out so your dog can see. Immediately once the dog sees the distraction, turn around and head away from the distraction.
Dog needs to be able to see the unexpected distraction and choose to turn with you away from distraction. I am NOT testing for perfection or a performance. I AM testing to make sure dog has succeeded in this weeks lesson of learning to SEE a distraction AND turn AWAY from that distraction to follow you, the handler. That is the sole purpose of LL at this level of training.
The point of this EXAM is to see IF, in the face of a great distraction, WILL the learning dog see the distraction and as you turn away, choose to turn with you WITHOUT a collar correction. That is a pass on this EXAM. And as you can see, the benefit to doing these EXAMS via video is you CAN certainly 'practice'.

EXAM Video: Mary/Molly
We took Molly to our friends’ house this afternoon. There were so many new sights, sounds and smells. Molly loved it and it was the perfect place to practice the LL with distractions. There was a cat sitting in their screened in porch, cows in the field behind them, chickens in their coop and the wind blowing stuff around. After a few times around the house, I asked my friend Chonnie, to help out with our Week 1 exam. This is how it went.
I love this method of training. Molly is becoming a joy to walk! We’ve come a long way and we’re anxious to learn more!
EXAM Video: Roxanne and Redd (2020)BTW, Redd was smelling where a pile of bumpers had been in the grass which is why I used that smell distraction as a way to set her up to succeed, a 'warmup mock Exam' practice. Then, when the real distraction came out, her beloved Wayne and the rest of the Lee Pack on the porch, she clearly sees them, I turn away AND she turns with me without a collar correction. So, this is a Pass for Redd.
That makes it easy to find.
Have fun with the test.
