William R. Koehler is credited with 4 innovations in the dog training world. Mind you, this was long before the introduction of food as a lure/bribe to get a dog to offer a behavior.
Margot Woods always said that, "Bill [Koehler] was the most unassuming man you'd ever meet. He was quiet, observant, thoughtful and his eyes watched/saw everything. He never missed anything happening and his energy was calm and deliberate with both people and dogs. ANY dog worked by Bill would forever after that session, melt when he came into their space as Bill's space when working a dog was 100% focus, attention and incredible precision of mechanics. He was clean and crystal clear in his mechanics and what he expected a dog, any dog, to do. He was a genius and the dogs revered him."
So the four innovations Bill is credited with are the following:
1) LL - the use of an equestrian piece of equipment to train a dog to choose to remain close to handler
2) Prep Time - the deliberate staging of training sessions between 'nothing to do and nothing to do'.
3) The 'magic' of throw chains to train a dog that 'something?' out there MIGHT bite the dog on the hip IF the dog fails to obey the Recall -done in a whisper.
4) The transition of on leash to off leash work, accomplished with light lines, is amazing psychology.
So, today we are getting ready for Week 6 to begin tomorrow. PAY ATTENTION and if/when you can see the whites of your dog's eyes - DO NOT THROW, simply Recall into SSIF, then Finish, then your release word and back to Cool Down mechanics ON THE 6' LEASH. TC work is done on the 6' leash. Week 6 is a time to get caught up and strengthen anything that needs fixing AND the TC work is 50% of your normal work this week.
If you, like me, are a lousy aim, go practice today where your dog can't see or hear you, and do all the mechanics with Fido (I always used a small cardboard box as my Fido for Week 6).
Any questions...post.
