Week 3 #: The magic of the Heeling Post

The Magic of a Heeling Post

Part of the reason I keep teaching is watching the transformation of the dog AND the owner. I love 'seeing the wheels turn' as the dog learns to think. I love 'seeing the owner learn how to help their dog succeed'. So, the process of transformation during this 10-weeks is a delight to me and every moment I see it occurring in each dog, I am inspired anew. There is no other dog training method I know of that produces this 'remarkable transformation' of the dog AND its owner.

Anyway, not sure if I have a heeling post video, but doing the heeling posts this week is KEY to the dog learning to stay closer than ever before while heeling. Nothing else, no other training, will convince the dog of the wisdom of staying within that 1' Safety Zone.

So, reread the homework instructions and go find something that will suffice as a solid (unmovable) heeling post and work your dog closer and closer to that solid heeling post. The point of this training work is that hopefully? the dog will be out (to far away) from you and will get caught, because of being out of heeling position, by the heeling post and you just keep going, don't stop because the dog got caught by the heeling post, you just keep going like nothing happened.

Once a dog gets 'caught' a couple of times, they will learn, mystically magically, the wisdom of staying closer and closer within 6-8"'.  You will need to do the heeling post, more than once, in various locations this week to succeed in the first exam, the Body Bend Readiness Exam on Day 17, which is this week. You must PASS this Body Bend Readiness Exam this week before I will post the Week 3: Discrimination Exam.

Have fun.
